How to tell it is wrong
- You wake with a stiff neck on one side, usually the side you sleep on. The pillow is too low and your head has been hanging.
- Your chin sits close to your chest when you lie back. It is too high.
- You fold the pillow in half at night. Too low, and folding is your body asking for the layer you removed.
- You start on the pillow and finish the night off it. Too high, most of the time.
Give it a few nights
The first night on a corrected height often feels worse rather than better, because the muscles have been holding a compensating position for years. Three or four nights is a fair test. Change one thing at a time, and keep the layer you took out somewhere you can find it.
