The company

Who is behind Casper

Casper Sleep Inc. is the operating company, and since late 2024 it has belonged to Carpenter Co., a privately held maker of polyurethane foam, fiber and chemicals based in Richmond, Virginia. Carpenter had supplied Casper for more than a year before the deal, and the price was not disclosed. Casper's pillow warranty still gives a New York address on Greenwich Street.

Casper did not make its own products when it went public: its 2020 IPO filing says it works with third-party manufacturing and logistics partners, and the pillow pages do not say where the pillows are made.

History

Casper history

The company was incorporated in Delaware on October 24, 2013 as Providence Mattress Company and renamed Casper Sleep Inc. on January 10, 2014. Casper says its story began that year with five founders. Philip Krim, Neil Parikh, Gabriel Flateman and T. Luke Sherwin are named in the sources we read; we could not confirm the fifth.

From one mattress the range grew into pillows, sheets and furniture, and a Down Pillow launched in 2019. Casper listed on the New York Stock Exchange in February 2020. Durational Capital Management agreed to buy it in November 2021 at $6.90 a share, Krim stepped down, and the take-private closed on January 25, 2022. Casper sold its Canadian business to Sleep Country for $20.6 million in April 2023, and Carpenter bought the company in late 2024.

In 2016 Casper sued the owners of three mattress review sites over affiliate-driven reviews. The cases settled confidentially, and Casper then financed a takeover of one of them, Sleepopolis, as WBUR reported in 2017.

Materials

What Casper pillows are made of

Casper's signature design is the pillow-in-pillow: on the Original, an inner pillow sits inside an outer one, both filled with polyester microfiber, and you can take the inner out for a lower loft. The cover is 100% cotton, and the pillow comes in Standard 18 x 26 in and King 18 x 34 in. Proprietary names belong to the cooling versions: Snow Technology combines a QuickCool cover, phase change material and HeatDelete bands, and the Original Cooling cover blends cotton with TENCEL lyocell. The Hybrid pairs polyurethane foam with polyester fiber.

Casper claims CertiPUR-US foam, an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 cover on its foam pillow and Responsible Down Standard down. The CertiPUR-US directory lists Casper with pillows among its categories, valid through 2026. No OEKO-TEX certificate number is published, and the RDS certificate holder could not be verified.

Policies

Trial, returns and warranty

Returns are not a sleep trial. You can return a pillow for a full refund within 30 days of delivery only if it is unused and in its original packaging. Casper provides a label for UPS drop-off. The 1-year limited warranty covers defects for the original purchaser and excludes normal softening and comfort preference. It applies to pillows bought from Casper or its authorized retailers in the US and Canada, and if you bought elsewhere, register the pillow to activate it and follow that store's return rules.

Shape and value are where Casper buyers turn critical. On the Original, 63% of 219 shape mentions and 53% of 360 value mentions are negative, and support splits 56 to 44 across 443. The Essential draws praise for looks (97% of 130 appearance mentions) but 41% of 247 neck support mentions are negative and flatness runs 68% negative. Hybrid buyers split nearly evenly on comfort, and two-thirds of thickness mentions are negative. The newer Essential Quilted Select Pillow starts well, 95% positive on 20 comfort mentions, though 82 ratings are too few to rank.

Casper suits

  • You want to lower a fiber pillow by removing its inner pillow, as the Original allows.
  • You want a cotton cover and a pillow you can machine wash whole, inner and outer.
  • You want a Casper at a lower price: the Essential is $40.50 a pillow in a two-pack.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want to sleep on a pillow before deciding: returns require it unused and in its packaging.
  • You need a pillow that keeps its shape: 63% of Original buyers who mention shape are negative.
  • You want foam at a fair price: the Hybrid costs $114.30 against a $33.99 median for solid memory foam.

Questions

Casper questions

Can you return a Casper pillow after sleeping on it?

Not under the current policy. Casper takes pillows back within 30 days of delivery only when they are unused and in their original packaging, so decide from the box. A store purchase follows that store's return rules.

Who makes your Casper pillow now?

Casper belongs to Carpenter Co., a Richmond foam and fiber maker, since late 2024. Its 2020 IPO filing said Casper relies on third-party manufacturers, and the pillow pages do not name a factory or country.

Should you choose the Casper Original or the Essential?

The Essential scores a little higher, 5.9 against 5.7, and costs $40.50 a pillow against $68. Only the Original lets you remove the inner pillow and machine wash both parts, while the Essential's listing calls for dry cleaning. Our Casper vs Purple comparison puts the Original against a grid and latex pillow.

Does the Casper warranty cover you if you bought from another store?

Only if the store is a Casper-authorized retailer in the US or Canada, and the warranty page asks you to register the pillow. Pillows from unauthorized resellers are excluded, and the cover lasts 1 year for the original purchaser.
