Casper Hybrid Pillow review

Foam layers wrapped around a fiber core, sold as firm and ideal for side sleepers, at $114.30 a pillow: nearly four times the median for its class, with buyer numbers that do not back the price.

Our verdict

Casper's Hybrid ranks 50th of the 53 pillows we rank, at 5.0. Value scores 3 and the complaint profile 2.8, and those two parts sink it.

Buyers are not hostile, with 4.2 stars from 432 ratings and 78% of ratings at four or five. They are lukewarm on the things a $116 pillow should win outright: comfort, thickness and value.

Fill and feel

Polyurethane foam outside, polyester fiber inside

Casper builds this pillow from foam layers around a fiber core, and the materials list gives 100% polyester fiber for the fill and 100% polyurethane foam for the layers. The maker calls it firm, says it suits all sleep styles and is ideal for side sleepers. Casper also says the outer foam keeps the shape steady, so you never need to fluff it.

Size and loft

Twenty-four by sixteen inches, and thin on paper

The dimensions field lists 24 by 16 inches and a thickness of 2 inches, with an item weight of 16 ounces. If those figures are right, this is a small, low pillow, and it matches the thickness complaints. Measure the pillowcase you plan to use before you buy.

Care

Knit cover, cold delicate wash, dry flat

Unzip the knit cover, 92% polyester and 8% spandex, and machine wash it cold on a delicate cycle. Lay it flat to dry, with no bleach and no iron. The foam core stays dry.

Value

Why the king two-pack costs more per pillow than one king

A single standard costs $114.30 and a standard pair $206.40, or $103.20 each. The king runs the other way: one costs $143.10, but the two-pack costs $318, or $159 a pillow. Solid foam pillows in our set have a median of $33.99.

For a side-sleeper foam pillow at a fraction of the price, the WEEKENDER Gel Memory Foam Pillow, Reversible Cover scores 6.5 at $54.57, and the Beckham Hotel Collection Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow scores 7.2 at $45 and lets you change the height.
