The best shredded memory foam pillows

Shredded foam is the fill most adjustable pillows use, though two picks here, both from MyPillow, come at a fixed fill.

Shredded memory foam is foam cut into small pieces and packed loose in a case. The pieces shift as you move, so the pillow takes the shape you push it into, and on most models you can open the case and change how much is inside. Eight of these ten open that way. The two MyPillow pillows do not.

Few shredded foam pillows clear 300 buyer ratings, and our score puts these ten on top, two per brand at most. That small field is why the list reaches down to MyPillow's pair, which score 5.6 and 5.2 and carry the heaviest complaint counts here. The median price for the fill is $27.49 a pillow.

How it behaves

Loose foam moves, so you shape it

Because the pieces move, a shredded pillow can be punched into a higher roll under your neck or pressed flat for a night on your stomach. That freedom is also the main risk: when the case is too full or too empty, the fill drifts. MyPillow Classic buyers mention lumpiness 262 times, 68% of them negatively.

Blends change the feel. Coop mixes in 24% polyester gel fiber, SUPA MODERN 15% microfiber, and Utopia Bedding lists 15% polyester fiber in its fill. Our shredded memory foam page covers how the cut and the blend behave.

Shape is the other choice. The SUPA MODERN crescent is cut with a curve along one edge and comes in queen only, and Coop sells its Original in crescent and cut-out versions as well as the plain one. If you want the pillow to meet your shoulder on your side, read those two first.

Adjusting

Set the fill before you judge the pillow

Remove a handful at a time, give each change a night, and keep the spare fill bagged. A firmer mattress usually calls for a thicker pillow and a softer one for a thinner pillow, as a chiropractor tells Cleveland Clinic, so the right amount of fill depends on your bed as much as your position. Our loft guide has the details.

If you do not want to adjust anything, the MyPillow Premium lets you pick one of four firmness levels at checkout instead. Buyers are hard on it, though, so read its firmness count before you choose that route.

Smell and care

Air it out, then wash what the label allows

New shredded foam smells to many buyers: 71% of the odor mentions on Coop are negative. Furnishings appear on the EPA's list of indoor sources of volatile organic compounds, and the agency's advice is ventilation, while it notes that little is known about effects at typical household levels.

Two picks, both from MyPillow, are sold as washable whole, five wash the cover, and three are spot clean or carry no instructions. CertiPUR-US certifies the polyurethane foam itself, not the pillow, and its directory lists QUTOOL and Coop but not SUPA MODERN, Utopia Bedding, Beckham or MyPillow. Our washing guide covers foam.

Questions

Questions buyers ask

Is shredded memory foam good for you if you change positions at night?

It suits that habit, because you can push the pieces where you need them and adjust the total. Eight of the ten picks let you remove fill. The SUPA MODERN Cooling Shredded Memory Foam Pillow leads at 7.9 and $19 a pillow.

Why does your shredded foam pillow feel lumpy?

The fill has often bunched in one corner, or the case holds too little. Shake it out, add back any fill you removed, or put it through the dryer if the maker allows it. Lumps that stay are a sign to replace it, and our replacement guide lists the others.

Can you adjust a MyPillow pillow?

No. The MyPillow Premium and MyPillow Classic use shredded foam at a fixed fill, and the Premium is sold in four firmness levels instead. Both score lowest here, 5.6 and 5.2.

How do you get rid of the smell of your new shredded foam pillow?

Air it. The EPA recommends ventilation for indoor sources of volatile organic compounds, a group that includes furnishings. Wash the cover per the label while the fill airs.
