Fill and feel

Two foam blends, one sold as cooling

Coop's listing gives 76% visco polyurethane foam and 24% polyester gel fiber, in a cover of 60% polyester and 40% viscose rayon. QUTOOL lists 85% cross-cut memory foam and 15% microfiber, under a two-sided cover with one face sold as cooling. Both makers call the feel medium. How loose foam moves and settles is covered in our shredded memory foam guide.

Size and loft

Same footprint, different height

Both listings give 29 by 19 inches. Coop lists 8 inches thick and QUTOOL 6, and you can unzip either to add or remove fill. According to the maker, Coop includes an extra bag of fill, and it sells crescent and cut-out shapes too. QUTOOL comes in Standard, Queen and King, while Coop sells Queen and King only.

Care, price and policies

What you pay and what you can send back

Both have removable, washable covers and score 8 for care. Coop's cover goes in cold on a gentle cycle, then into the dryer on low. QUTOOL warns against washing the foam and against heat in the dryer.

A Coop Queen costs $89. QUTOOL's Queen two-pack is $39.99, or $20 a pillow, and its Blue-ice Plus version runs $34.99 to $43.50 a pillow. A Coop bought direct comes with a 100-day window to decide and a 5-year limited warranty behind it. QUTOOL's homepage says 90 nights, its shipping page says 30-day returns, and it states no warranty term. Our budget pillow picks cover more pillows near QUTOOL's price.

Questions

Questions buyers ask

Is the Coop Original worth the extra money over QUTOOL?

On our scale the two are a tenth of a point apart. Coop's extra money buys higher buyer satisfaction, fewer complaints, a 100-day trial on direct purchases and a 5-year warranty. If those terms matter less to you than price, QUTOOL scores almost the same.

Will a Coop or QUTOOL pillow smell when you open it?

Buyers raise odor on both. Of Coop's 3,790 odor mentions 71% are negative, and of QUTOOL's 253, 82% are. QUTOOL suggests airing the pillow for a day or two.

Is QUTOOL cooler than Coop for you?

QUTOOL sells its pillow as cooling and Coop does not. Of the 1,139 QUTOOL buyers who mention cooling, 63% are positive. These are buyer reports, not temperature measurements.
