The best pillows

Twelve pillows that top our score, from hotel-style fiber sets under $10 a pillow to adjustable foam, each with the catch buyers raise most.

Height decides more than anything else. A pillow that sits too high or too low for the way you sleep holds your neck at an angle all night, and no cover or fill can make up for the wrong height. Fill comes second: shredded foam lets you set the height yourself, feather shifts under your hand, and polyester fiber is the cheapest of the three and the one where you should read the flatness counts first.

Our ranking starts from the 53 pillows that carry at least 300 buyer ratings and sorts them by our score, six parts from buyer satisfaction and the complaint profile down to care and value. A brand can hold two places at most, so no single maker crowds out the rest, and the 12 picks come from nine brands. Every score rests on published specs, maker policies and the whole rating pool.

Height

Start with the height your neck needs

Side sleeping needs the most height, because the pillow has to fill the gap between your ear and the mattress. Back sleeping needs less, and stomach sleeping least of all. Clinicians quoted by Harvard Health say side sleepers usually need a firmer pillow and back and stomach sleepers a thinner one.

Your mattress moves the answer too. A chiropractor writing for Cleveland Clinic notes that a firmer mattress usually calls for a thicker pillow and a softer one for a thinner pillow. Our loft guide walks through a check you can do at home, and the lists for side, back and stomach sleepers narrow the field by the position each maker names.

Fill

Choose the fill by the trade-off you can live with

Shredded memory foam takes six of the 12 places, and eight picks in all let you remove fill until the height suits you. The common complaint against foam is smell when new: 71% of the 3,790 Coop buyers who mention odor are negative. Furnishings sit on the EPA's list of indoor sources of volatile organic compounds, and the agency recommends ventilation while noting that little is known about effects at typical household levels. Air a new foam pillow before the first night, and read our shredded memory foam page for the rest.

Polyester fiber costs least, from $7.62 a pillow, and the counts to read are flatness and thickness. Feather moves when you push it, which some sleepers want and others fight every night. Read down and feather and down alternative before you settle on either.

Care and cost

Read the care label and the price per pillow

Four of the 12 picks go in the washer whole, six have a zip-off cover, one is spot clean only and one comes with no care instructions. That matters if you wash bedding hot: Mayo Clinic gives 130 F as the minimum wash temperature for bedding, with a hot dryer for items that cannot be washed that hot. Our washing guide goes fill by fill.

Compare price per pillow, not per box. Four-packs bring fiber pillows down to $7.62 each, while the dearest pick, Coop's Eden at $109, sits far above the $33.99 median for its fill. Value is one of six parts in the score, which is why Coop's Original at $89 still ranks fifth overall.

Questions

Questions buyers ask

Which pillow should you buy if you are not sure how you sleep?

An adjustable shredded foam pillow is the forgiving place to start, because you can take fill out or add it back until the height suits you. Our top pick, the SUPA MODERN Cooling Shredded Memory Foam Pillow, costs $19 a pillow in a pair and has a cover that zips off for the wash. The adjustable list has nine more.

How much do you need to spend on a good pillow?

Less than the top of the market. Our first-ranked pillow costs $19, and the median price per pillow is $27.49 for shredded foam and $25 for down alternative fiber. The Coop Original scores 3.0 for value at $89, though it rests on 64,006 ratings and a 100-day trial for direct purchases.

How often should you replace your pillow?

For feather, Harvard Health suggests a new pillow every year or so, since feather collapses, and it is the only medical publisher we found that gives an interval. Other fills come with no interval, so watch for the signs in our replacement guide instead of a date.

Do you need a cooling pillow if you sleep hot?

Treat "cooling" as the maker's word and read the buyer counts. On our top pick, 67% of the 1,409 buyers who mention cooling are positive and the rest are not. The cooling list ranks ten pillows sold as cooling, and our cooling materials page explains what gel and special covers do.
