Pacific Coast Adjustable Cooling Down Pillow review

A feather-and-down pillow built from snap-together pads you can remove, sold as cooling, at $55 to $75 a pillow, with a promising but very small buyer record.

Our verdict

On paper this is one of our strongest feather pillows, at 7.8. Fit range scores 9 thanks to the removable pads, the complaint profile 8.7 and care 10.

Read that score as provisional. Only 82 buyers have rated it, below the 300 we need to rank a pillow, so it sits outside the ranking as an early read. Value is the weak part at 5.4.

Fill and feel

Four layers: down-fiber pads around a feather core

Pacific Coast calls this a 4-in-1 design. The outer pads hold down fiber, the core holds goose feathers, and snap buttons fix the layers so they do not slide. Remove a pad and the pillow drops toward a stomach-sleeping height. If you sleep on your side, keep all four. The maker rates the feel plush.

Cooling

A phase-change cover, by the maker's account

The maker says the cover uses PCM, a phase-change material, and quotes a verified Q-Max value above 0.4. Q-Max measures how cool a fabric feels at first touch, and the figure is the maker's alone. Note also that the details table lists a 90% nylon fabric while another field calls the cover cotton.

Value

Priced well above its closest rival

Pairs cost $109.99 in standard, $129.99 in queen and $149.99 in king, or $55 to $75 a pillow. You would pay $34.99 for the median feather pillow. For comparison, the Three Geese Adjustable Layer Goose Feather Pillow also lets you remove layers, scores 7.9 on a ranked pool, and costs $44.99.

The listing claims OEKO-TEX and RDS. Its OEKO-TEX number belongs to a denim garment maker, and RDS was not verified. More on the brand sits on the Pacific Coast brand page.
