Purple Harmony Pillow review

A Talalay latex core wrapped in Purple's gel grid, offered in three heights and fully machine washable, at a price that most buyers who discuss value find too high.

Our verdict

The Harmony scores 6.2 and ranks 38th of 53. Care is the standout at 10.0, since the whole pillow can be washed, and value shows 8.6. That value figure flatters it: the Harmony is the only latex pillow we score, so it is measured against its own price. Proof at 4.0 and a complaint profile of 5.4 explain the rest.

Suits

  • Side sleepers who can choose the Medium or Tall height with confidence
  • Anyone who wants a springy feel rather than the slow sink of memory foam
  • Hot sleepers: 71% of buyers who mention temperature are positive

Think twice if

  • Buyers who balk at $194 for one pillow
  • Anyone counting on years of use with only a 1-year warranty
  • Sleepers who cannot decide on a height before the 30-night trial runs out

69% of 7,142 ratings are five stars, yet 9% are one star. Cooling, which Purple promises all night, holds up reasonably: 71% of 294 buyers who mention temperature are positive. Value does not. Of 698 buyers who discuss price, 60% are negative.

Shape retention splits 47% positive across 222 mentions, and durability 50% across 178, which sits awkwardly beside Purple's line about no fluffing and no flattening. The quotes below come from reviews published on Purple's own website, which the brand moderates. Two critical ones describe the wrong height on day one and a pillow that went flat after six months.

This Purple Harmony Pillow is the first pillow that I've loved as much the first night as I do two months later.
★★★★★ Priy, purple.com
My only gripe is the case didn't go on quite as nicely after washing, and air drying to lessen damage to it means maybe not having my pillow for a night.
★★★★☆ Britterati, purple.com
After sleeping on it one night my wife decided she needed to return hers for the thicker one. Your head falls through to the mattress.
★★★☆☆ Scottie P, purple.com
I loved it at first. For 6 months it was great. Cool and supportive then… it started getting flat.

Fill and feel

Latex inside, honeycomb grid outside

Purple builds the Harmony around a Talalay latex core and wraps it in its honeycomb GelFlex Grid; the latex sits inside as a removable insert. One buyer on the brand site calls it springy and says it does not hold the shape of your head the way memory foam does. The listing rates the feel medium and names side, back and stomach sleepers.

Purple says the grid and the aerated latex pull heat away. Buyers mostly agree on cooling, as the counts show. Proof stays low because no pillow page names a certification; the CertiPUR-US directory lists Purple only at company level. Our page on latex and gel grid pillows explains how the two materials behave, so you can judge the feel before you order.

Size and loft

Pick the height before you buy

Purple makes three heights: Low at 5.5 inches for stomach and back sleepers, Medium at 6.5 and Tall at 7.5 for side sleepers who feel shoulder pressure. The standard measures 26 to 28 by 17 inches and the king 34 by 17. In the offers we track, the standard comes only in Medium and the king in Medium or Tall.

Height is where you can go wrong. One owner says the king he chose let his head fall through to the mattress, while another found even the lowest setting too thick and removed the latex insert entirely. If your shoulders are broad, the Tall king is the safer start.

Care

The whole pillow goes in the machine

Purple lists the whole Harmony as machine washable, which earns care its 10.0. The top cover is 92% nylon and 8% spandex. Air drying protects it, as one buyer points out, at the cost of a night without your pillow.

Value

A premium price with short terms

The standard Medium costs $194. You get 30 nights to return one bought from Purple directly, provided it comes back clean and undamaged, and a 1-year limited warranty for the original purchaser. A pillow that fails after the first year is yours to replace.

Two of our comparisons put it head to head: Purple vs Tempur-Pedic and Casper vs Purple. For side sleepers, our side sleeper ranking lists the pillows that score best at that job, and the Purple brand page covers the rest of the range.

Questions

Questions about the Purple Harmony Pillow

Which Purple Harmony height should you buy?

Purple says Low (5.5 inches) for stomach and back sleepers and Medium (6.5) or Tall (7.5) for side sleepers. Buyers on the brand site report both mistakes, a head that falls through and a pillow too thick even at its lowest, so match the height to the position you hold most of the night.

Can you wash the Purple Harmony Pillow?

Yes. Purple lists the whole pillow as machine washable; air drying the cover helps it keep its fit.

How long is the Purple Harmony warranty?

One year, limited, for the original purchaser. One buyer who received it as a gift needed the giver's receipt to claim it.
