Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Symphony Pillow review

A two-pack of soft TEMPUR foam pillows sold for every sleep position, where size and softness draw more complaints than praise and returns are closed.

Our verdict

The TEMPUR-Symphony scores 5.4, 48th of 53. Value reaches 8.6 because the price matches other TEMPUR pillows, and care 8.0. The complaint profile at 2.8 and a fit range of 4.0 pull it into the bottom group: buyers dispute both its size and how far your head sinks.

Suits

  • Back sleepers who want a soft, low foam pillow
  • Owners of an older Symphony who know its feel and accept a smaller footprint
  • Couples who want two matching pillows in one box

Think twice if

  • Anyone sleeping on a queen or king who wants a full-width pillow
  • Petite sleepers who need a very low pillow
  • Buyers who want to return a pillow after a night on it

Of 4,919 ratings, 64% are five stars and 13% are one or two. Sleep quality earns 84% positive mentions, but the physical topics turn sour. Size runs 82% negative across 68 mentions, softness 61% negative across 259, while shape retention manages 46% positive and durability 46%.

Side sleepers are more forgiving: 65% of 65 who raise it approve. The quotes below come from reviews published on Tempur-Pedic's own website, which the brand moderates. Lee's five-star quote dates from 2011; the newer reviews describe a smaller, lighter pillow than the one buyers remember.

I sleep on my back, on my side and on my stomach. This pillow beats any pillow I have ever slept on for just the right firmness, just the right softness
★★★★★ Lee, tempurpedic.com
The pillows I received were much smaller than the original ones I purchased before. These pillows were only 24 inches but the original ones were 29.
★★★★☆ Lyn, tempurpedic.com
Initially when I lay down, the pillow is at decent height. But as I sink in my shoulders become pinched through the night.
★☆☆☆☆ Leo, tempurpedic.com
Not anymore, not sure what changed but these are half the weight, flattened to almost nothing while sleeping on them

Fill and feel

One piece of TEMPUR-Material, soft grade

Each Symphony is a single piece of TEMPUR-Material. The listing rates it soft, and Tempur-Pedic's own copy calls the feel extra soft and adds dual-sided support without saying what the second side does differently.

That sink matters for side sleepers. As your head settles into soft foam, the gap between head and mattress shrinks, and one buyer on the brand site describes pinched shoulders by morning. Proof stays at 4.0 because the listing names no certification, though the CertiPUR-US directory lists Tempur-Pedic at company level.

Size and loft

Smaller than many owners expect

The listing gives 22.8 by 14.8 inches and a 3-inch loft. That is narrower than the 24 by 15.75 inch TEMPUR-Cloud, and a long-time owner on the brand site says the older Symphony measured 29 inches and that the new pair looks lost on a queen bed.

Three inches is low, yet one petite buyer still finds it too high. Before ordering, measure the pillow you sleep on now while your head rests on it; if it compresses to well under 3 inches, the Symphony will feel taller. If you need the lowest possible pillow, compare the TEMPUR-Neck, which comes in a Small profile, before you order.

Care

Washable knit, foam stays dry

A 100% polyester knit cover unzips and machine washes; the foam does not, which is why care stops at 8.0. Together the pair weighs 6.6 pounds. Since you cannot wash the foam, a zippered protector under the knit cover keeps sweat off the part that has to last the 5-year warranty.

Value

Two pillows, one price, no trial

The Symphony sells only as a two-pack, at $149 or $74.50 a pillow, against a $74.50 median for TEMPUR pillows. You can't buy one to try. Tempur-Pedic accepts returns only for damage or defects, and one buyer who kept the tags on after a single night was still refused.

A 5-year limited warranty covers defects. If you want soft memory foam at a lower risk, the memory foam ranking lists pillows that score higher, and the Tempur-Pedic brand page shows the rest of the lineup.
